The Precolumbian Indian culture of the American Southwest may not have employed quipus, but they did build impressive works of civil engineering. Until recently, their extensive canal systems have elicited the most admiration; but modern aerial photography and remote sensing have revealed an amazing pattern of straight roads radiating from Chaco Canyon. The purposes of these roads is still obscure. What is obvious is that we have much more to learn about remarkable peoples.
